The Pupil Premium is allocated to schools with pupils on roll that known to have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any time in the last six years; that are children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months; or that are children of service personnel. Schools have the freedom to spend the Premium, which is additional to the underlying schools budget, in a way they think will best support the raising of attainment for the most vulnerable pupils.

Catch up Premium

The government has announced £1 billion of funding to support children and young people to catch up. This includes a one-off universal £650 million catch-up premium for the 2020 to 2021 academic year to ensure that schools have the support they need to help all pupils make up for lost teaching time.

St Luke’s Catholic Primary will receive £12,480 in catch-up premium. This funding will be paid to the school in three instalments throughout the academic year.

St Luke’s is using the funding for specific planned interventions and training to support all pupils to catch up for lost teaching over the previous months, in line with the guidance on curriculum expectations for the next academic year.

At St Luke’s we aim to spend our funding on:

Read, Write, Inc Phonics training and resources.

This will ensure that the quality of phonics teaching across the school is of a high standard allowing all children to make progress. Alongside this school is investing in the purchase of phonetically decodable reading books to support the children’s application of phonics when reading. The impact of the training and resources will be monitored by the school’s phonics manager alongside the senior leadership team. Children’s progress will be regularly assessed and further support and intervention will be given to children who require it.

Small group intervention and support.

We have identified small groups of children in years 3, 4 and 6 who will benefit from small group intervention. These children have been identified through assessment and will complete a programme of additional lessons in mathematics and writing led by a qualified teacher. Teaching staff will ensure that the support closely matches the needs of the group. All interventions will be closely monitored to ensure that it is having an impact on the children’s knowledge, understanding and application of skills.

Nuffield Early Language Intervention (NELI) Programme

In addition St Luke’s has been accepted to take part in The Nuffield Early Language Intervention (NELI) programme. The aim of this oral language intervention is to support children in nursery and reception who show difficulties in their spoken language and therefore could be at risk of experiencing difficulty with reading.
